The Omicron Variant
Back in September, the Delta Variant was all the rage. Now, heading into 2022, it appears the Omicron Variant has supplanted it. Unfortunately, it looks like variants will come and go for the foreseeable future. Corona viruses mutate frequently and not enough of the world’s population will likely be vaccinated to prevent these variant waves. Fortunately, it seems at this juncture, though the data is preliminary, those who are vaccinated do not get seriously ill and most recover.
Another ray of sunshine in this bleak picture has been the vaccines approved for children over 5. That’s a huge relief to everyone.
Given our ability to better treat Sars-CoV-2 and the vaccine, full-scale lockdowns like those which occurred in 2020 seem unlikely. Thus, we are still planning on gathering in March unless the Federal or State government institutes lockdowns. If we wait for COVID to go away, then we might never get together. However, it’s a new world so please be prepared for a few things.
One, plan to wear a mask. In Nevada they are required indoors unless eating or drinking. The evidence is abundantly clear that masks work, so plan on having one and using it. Transmission outdoors is very unlikely, so there is less imperative to wear one.
Two, you’ll need to be vaccinated to have dinner with us on Saturday evening. Many restaurants are asking to show proof of vaccination before entering, mainly to protect their staff and business. Waiters will also be masked for our protection. If by some chance the restaurant does not require proof of vaccination, then we will.
Three, while this goes without saying, do not travel if you’re feeling ill. If you get sick last minute and cannot travel due to quarantine, we will refund 25% of your payment upon receiving a positive COVID test.
Four, continuous use of hand sanitizer is imperative. We’ll have hand sanitizer available for anyone who wants it. Never pass up an opportunity to use some.
I realize none of this is ideal. We all wish that gathering and travel weren’t so complicated now. However, since this epidemic shows no signs of easing, we are all learning how to live with it. Thus, we continue to plan as if this event will happen. I hope you are too. COVID has taken so much from many of us, and it would be a shame to let it take this, too.
