Dam, That’s Amazing.

The Hoover Dam is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the area. A mere 39 miles from the Strip (~45 minute trip, based on traffic), this iconic location is a great way to get out of town and enjoy the beauty of the area. Assuming it’s not July or August. You really shouldn’t be outside the AC in July or August in Vegas.

The history of the dam is fascinating; more than 100 people were killed in association with construction of the dam. The massive labor force involved spawned its own town, now Boulder City, NV. And while paid for by the government, the work was completed by a private company that completed the project two years ahead of schedule. Truly an engineering marvel, many of the engineering techniques used were completely untested at the time.

Completed in March of 1936, the dam weighs 6,600,000 tons and is made up of more than 5 million barrels of concrete, making up three and one-quarter million cubic yards. From base to the top of the roadway, the dam is 726.4 feet tall.

The majesty of Hoover dam creates the reservoir that is Lake Mead. When full, Lake Mead is the largest reservoir in the US, by volume. Sadly, it is definitely not full these days; as of June 2021, Lake Mead held 35.17% of full capacity. No big surprise as Lake Mead water is used by several states, as well as Mexico, covering more than 15 million people and farmland.

That’s a lot of stats and, please, read more at the links below if you’re curious as this is a really amazing tourist attraction. The history, Art Deco architecture, and groundbreaking engineering are all worth your time.
